For now, I am still in the MRC, Missionary Recovery Center, which has been a lot of fun! I have taken the MRC on as my area for now and I am doing all that I can to help the senior couples here to progress this area just as I would any other area. It was a great experience to be here with Sister Glick. She was in my district in the MTC. We spent several days together here and got all caught up on the last couple months. We have been given so many opportunities to serve others. I have learned so much about how being sick and feeling like it would be completely acceptable to be sick and only care for myself, but to instead turn and help these little children who live in a place like the Ronald McDonald home called Mabuhay. These poor little children are awaiting medical treatments and it was such an amazing thing to think that we as missionaries have the opportunity to serve in a way that we never realize. We have cared for those who are less fortunate than us. We have been able to take care of those around us who are in a much worse state than we are. We also went to a cancer hospital for little children, and to see the smiles on all of their little faces as we sang "The Wheels on the Jeepney" and "If you're Happy and you Know it". You really learn a lot about the Savior and His work here on the earth, His love for each and every one of us. It reminds me of a talk by Elder David A. Bednar we listened to in the MTC about Christ and how even in the darkest of His days He still turned outward to serve others and to care for those around Him. I have learned that in the days when you are really feeling your absolute best it is so easy to turn and to serve and care for those around you but to turn and really serve when even you are the one who could be the one receiving that same care, it really changes you. I have been able to go over several times and serve in the temple, in the laundry and actually was able to do a session. I was pretty much bent over the whole time in pain but I did help someone to progress in their life. The other thing we have been focusing on a lot right now is indexing and working on the other side of the veil. So far, of all the missionaries here, I have been a part of training them all to be indexers and just within the month of July so far we have indexed 27 batches of names to be sent to the temple for work.
For right now, I love being able to fulfill my purpose here in the small ways that I am able to. Even though I am not out teaching people in front of me, I have the opportunity to use my time here as a missionary to progress the work for those on the other side of the veil to receive their ordinances. I had the opportunity to speak with a senior couple sister who said the best thing to me. She said that the Lord knows our mission plans and because for me its been 2 weeks now that I haven't been able to work it doesn't mean that my mission has come to a stop. I have still been the same missionary on the same mission even though right now I am not in my proselyting area, this is just my temporary area to be able to learn the lessons that I would only be able to learn here in this area.
I really do know that my Father in Heaven has a plan for me, especially for my mission and that this time is all apart of my experience on my mission. I am still a missionary here and I still have a work to do, just right now I get the opportunity to turn and let the Lord work on me instead of working on other people. I really know that to be the truth. I am so very grateful for all of the miracles, the opportunities and the experiences that I have been given here and I am just trusting that my Heavenly Father will provide the rest of the way for me here as well. I hope all is well with you all there and I am so excited to hear the experiences from all of you!

This is Elder Arner, the Area Medical Adviser. I want to provide you with an update on your daughter, Sister Hansen and to assure you that she is safe, comfortable and improving health wise. She is currently in the MRC (Missionary Recovery Center) in Manila where she is recuperating after a particularly nasty bout of gastroenteritis that necessitated her being hospitalized at Baypointe Hospital in Olongapo. All of the sister missionaries in her apartment got ill simultaneously and there was some concern that it was amebiasis, although Sister Hansen's tests were negative for that diagnosis. I suspect that it was more likely shigellosis though no cultures were done so this remains a supposition only. She was treated and was rehydrated and subsequently discharged when her symptoms resolved and she was showing improvement. We moved her to Manila when it appeared that the recovery might take longer than 48-72 hours.

The MRC is a comfortable, safe residential unit on the grounds of the Church's Philippines Area Offices complex and it abuts the MTC, but is functionally separate from it. It is across the street from the Manila Temple. It is also directly above the Area Medical Offices. It is overseen by two experienced nurses, Elder and Sister Kasteler, both of whom are full time missionaries. It is not a hospital or even a clinic, but it is a pleasant place to recover for missionaries who may also need access to additional medical services that can be found only in Manila. Incidentally, this is the only MRC in the Church. While in the MRC, she has the opportunity to participate in several service projects and to attend the temple regularly.

You are undoubtedly aware that Sister Hansen has had a variety of medical problems since arriving in the Philippines, including skin infections as well as the GI problems. Through all of this she has been very upbeat and has demonstrated the commitment and endurance we so admire in our missionaries. There is no question this has taken a toll on her but she presses forward and does not complain. She has a bright and happy countenance even though at times there has been substantial discomfort. She has improved since arriving in the MRC but is not completely recovered at this point. I visited with her at length again today to assess where we are and to formulate a longer term plan. When she arrived she was still having intermittent problems with abdominal pain and with loss of appetite. She also had a recurrence of a very itchy skin rash which may in part have been due to the medications she received previously and she had a urinary tract infection. The rash and the UTI are largely corrected but the abdominal discomfort persists intermittently. Her appetite has improved and she is eating and drinking normally. You would not know there was any problem to see her or to visit with her, but it appears she has a residual gastritis with a component of mild reflux. She has been started on a proton pump inhibitor (the generic form of Prilosec) in addition to her medication for the UTI and her rash. I am hoping that she will respond well and will ready to return to her mission in a couple of days. All of her lab work at this point is normal.

I am a bit reserved in this assessment due to the slow nature of Sister Hansen's recovery. There does appear to be a small subgroup of North American missionaries who, for lack of a better term, develop an allergically mediated response to certain foods and/or other environmental factors as yet unidentified and have great difficulty getting past the abdominal pains associated with this reactive gastroenteritis. This is not the same thing she had when she was admitted to Baypointe. That was true bacterial gastroenteritis. What she has at the moment however looks very much like what we have seen in so many others. It is a condition that frequently requires a medical release and reassignment after an appropriate time of healing at home. We are not at that point yet, but I mention it because it is a possibility given all of the medical problems she has had to endure. If we cannot get excellent control of her abdominal pain with medication and diet, we may have to revisit that choice. Sister Hansen is fully aware of this and I have informed President and Sister Dahle, though all of us hope that she will return to the field fully functional in a few days. By the way, I should mention that President and Sister Dahle are extraordinarily watchful shepherds over their missionary flock. There is no Mission President and wife combination who does a better job of that here (and I suspect anywhere). She is fortunate and blessed to be a part of the Olongapo Mission.

I will update you as things progress. We should know much more in a few days and as soon as things appear to be moving in either direction I will contact you. Please be reassured that she is comfortable and in very nice surroundings. She is not suffering. Having had a son who had similar gi problems on his mission in Russia, I am not only empathetic, I am sympathetic. I know how anxiety producing these situations are for parents when our children are a great distance away. We tend to imagine the worst. However, she looks great and sounds great and is actually blessing the lives of others who are concurrently residents in the MRC through her cheerful attitude. You have every reason to be very proud of her. She truly has embraced this great cause of hastening the work of salvation among these wonderful people in the Philippines.

If you have questions, I will certainly try to answer them.

Gratefully,
Two weeks ago Teesh's companion wasn't feeling well so they came back to the apartment to rest. Within a few hours, all 4 housemates were all not feeling well and Teesh seemed to be the worst. The mission president wife was contacted when Teesh's fever reached 103. A nearby neighbor took all 4 missionaries to the hospital. A kind Sister White held Teesh's hand while her blood was drawn and Teesh said she was not even coherent enough when the IV was placed. Blessing on both accounts as Teesh has a fear of needles.
Within a few days, Teesh was checked for appendicitis and amoebas. Both tests came back negative, thank goodness. The other sisters all had parasites but Teesh continued with symptoms with very little relief of discomfort.
Day 6 Teesh was released from the hospital and transferred to the MRC(Missionary Recovery Center) it is located in Manila as part of the Manila MTC. Teesh said there is a Dr from the United States who is called to serve the entire Philippines. He wants to look Teesh over himself and try to get to the bottom of why after this long the symptoms still persist.
It was great to email with Teesh for a little while. She seems upbeat and optimistic. She appreciates all your prayers on her behalf and is excited to get back out there to serve the Lord.
Sister Hansen sends her love and hopes everyone is doing well. Congrats Nathan and Tina on an adorable baby girl and she loves the name you chose.
Hoping next week all will have returned to normal!
Well, no fires in the church this week luckily! We had a week of finding new investigators! In this week alone we met and taught 22 new investigators. 2 days in a row we taught 8 investigators. I have never heard of anything like that before. This Sunday, we had an area broadcast where we heard from Elder Neil L. Anderson and several other General Authorities. The message they had for us is we need to be willing to be the one to stand up and do something. They said multiple times will you be the one? We all have the opportunity to stand and to be the one to help another and its such an amazing gift we have all been given.
We had exchanges this week but since I am so new here we just had the STL come and go on exchanges with Sister Restorque. So she got to see our day to day here. That was fun! But I am so glad I wasn't on exchanges I am still turned around in this new area. Once I get to some areas, I am OK, but sometimes they all look the same. There are a lot of kids here and since I am sometimes the only white/red person around the kids all follow and say Barbie Barbie. The kids all joke with my last name too and say Sister Hansel (Hansel is a brand of crackers like ritz crackers). I love being around more kids here they are the best! It's a lot easier to practice my new sentences on them because they are very honest with you. If you can understand what they respond to you. The language is still hard but I am taking it one sentence at a time to really know what I am saying to people. It's a strange thing to try and figure out the things you really want the person to hear and then to say it as simply and clearly as you can. It makes it really hard sometimes to do that but at the same time it really makes you question what is the most important that these people need to hear. Do they really need the extra fluff or do they just need to know that Jesus Christ is their Savior. I never realized before how much of the gospel got so confusing to all of us because we want more. The gospel really is simple and it is meant to be that way. The gospel is meant for everyone old or young smart or not. The gospel is all encompassing and is truly the greatest thing we have. The gospel really does bring us the most peace of mind and the best comfort in the world. I love that the church doesn't change whether you are in Salt Lake City or you are in the Philippines, it is the same.
It's such a comfort to me to think that every Sunday I get to participate in the same sacred ordinance of the sacrament here that you do as well, you just take it 13 hours later ;)
I love being here and having the opportunity to touch the lives of those around me. I have the same opportunity here to be an example of our Savior, Jesus Christ that you do at home and it is such a great opportunity. To learn of Him and to be able to show others the things he does for each of us all the time. This week the phrase I have really been touched by is that Jesus Christ is the center of our message. It really is true that Jesus Christ is the reason we do all that we do as missionaries. Not for members not for numbers but for Jesus Christ. All we do is help those around us see the example of Jesus Christ and teach them of His gospel and plan for us. I am so grateful and glad for my opportunity to serve as a servant of my Savior Jesus Christ and to help those around me better know Him. I love you all! and hope your week is amazing!
Transfers this last week were crazy! If you didn't hear, I was transferred! I have moved south for rainy season ( I would say winter but it's hotter here in the south) So, unfortunately I am not able to kill the rat but I left Sister Walker and Sister Potestad in charge of killing the thing!
I was in shock at being transferred. I did not expect it would be me leaving and I was the only one that left. The first thing I was told about my new area was that there are more bugs and more rats here! But so far I haven't seen any rats just flying cockroaches everywhere. So we keep the doors closed at night to keep them out.
Pilar is going to be a lot of work for me even more than Olongapo city was. We have a lot of work to do to organize the branch here and to continue and teach investigators and work toward a more organized area. I think I will be able to pick up this area a lot quicker than my last because there are a lot less barangi (or neighborhoods) The hardest part will be the language. In this zone, I am the only white person, there are foreigners but they all look either samaon or Filipino. I will get the opportunity to play the piano here. I guess only very few people know how to play so I am the designated pianist for church. Our church is tiny! There are 3 rooms, the chapel, and two classrooms and the baptismal font is outside! We had quite the experience yesterday there. We had our Branch Council Meeting and we kept hearing this noise coming from one of the rooms. We figured it was just a kid still in the church playing. The member of the branch presidency then turned his head around the corner to see what really was going on and they saw a spark. The ceiling fan had caught fire! So we all ran outside and leaders started looking for water anywhere they could find it, One old Tatay even got in a tricycle and went to go find help, but came back with the police or Pulis as it is spelled here :) We all had a good laugh that the police showed up to help us put out a fire and that the church almost burnt down. We made sure that President Dahle was informed of this and that only minimal damage was done to the building itself. The news here spread like wildfire and everyone knew so quickly we all had some good laughs about it all. I am going to make sure to take lots of pictures of this new area for you all because its more like what you think the Philippines are, rice fields, and being in the middle of nowhere. All the work we have to do here in this branch makes me feel so blessed to have the organization we have in Salt Lake. I am determined to bring the organization that I can here to leave this area much better than I found it! I'll get lots of pictures for next week so that you can all see my new area. Already, I have cute little kids always coming up to me and hugging me. I didn't get that in my last area, so I am excited for the new opportunities. Just so you know, our church attendance was only 70, definitely not the 200+ I am used to in Olongapo. One day we will get there, we will have to add to the church building in order to fit everyone! that can be our goal :) It's actually kinda funny this new area of mine, I am actually in Sister Lucillo's last area before she came to Olongapo for her last transfer. I am replacing her trainee from 6 months ago but who would have thought right?
Hope all is going well with you all at home that you all are being watched over and protected. A special Happy Birthday to a little 6 yr old girl on Friday! Happy Birthday to you, Ada Rae! Have fun and go do something together. It's independence day here in the Philippines so I bet it will be a big celebration here just for you Miss Ada Rae. Have fun with your little gifts from Elder Longson, I have some of the kiskis ( they are the small beads, with the terrible English instructions) sitting on my desk so I have some too! In the instructions I sent I said a 2 L bottle, it may need to be bigger or less water. But have fun with those they are so cool looking! I hope you have fun with them and with your lego person.
We got to go on exchanges this week so I was in Sister Potestad's area and that was fun to see the people she works with on a daily basis. We spent some of the time getting ready for the Restoration showing. We have been praying it would all work out alright. The rest of the week was pretty much the same. We found out though that two of our investigators who we have been trying so hard to prepare for baptism in June won't be able to be baptized until their mother returns in 2017! Poor things! They are so ready, but I understand too I wouldn't want to miss my children's baptism. We will keep helping them prepare!
So, that brings us to Friday. We showed up at the Triangle (like a sports court where the film showing would be) and there was a basketball game going on with really tall white men. It was weird to see white people again. But we got all the chairs set up and went around inviting people to stay and join us. In total, we ended up with about 200 people there and got a lot of people's information that we can now go and find and teach! There was even a man who walked up to us and grabbed an invitation from me and look at me like he would only come if I was there, it was weird but he didn't show up.
Saturday morning, we had our Branch 3 Summer Activity, also another great event. We had a lot of people show up there too! Later that night, President Mangrobang and his family took us to dinner for Elder Longsons last one. When we got home for the night, Sister Potestad said she smelled gas so I went to go check the stove to see if we left the propane on or something and the next thing I know something is flying in my face! The rat was in the stove and jumped at my face!!!! We all screamed and screamed as it ran around the room and was probably scared for its life as were we. Apparently, we were so loud as Sister Shirley, next door neighbor, came running right over asking what was wrong. We told her about the rat and she said we have to catch it and she would kill it for us if we were too afraid to. So we are killing the rat ASAP. I was too freaked out to see where it went but we found out the next morning as I went to get into my desk drawers! The rat went crazy on my stuff! It chewed through plastic bottles and ate through the binding of my bible and chewed on all my books! I don't know why this rat only likes my stuff but it only likes my stuff, maybe a nibble here or there in the other sisters stuff but with mine it goes to town.So I am determined to kill the thing as soon as it gets in the trap. I decided to ask Brother Howard last night to see what he recommended and he lent us a cage that traps the rats inside. So we have that set up to kill the rat! We did a major deep clean this morning cause it got into more of my food last night. So there will be pictures to come if I am still here to kill the rat this week! The Elders said they have a rat in their home as well and that you just learn to always have one in every apartment. This week is transfer week so there are letters and gifts coming to you all, especially to a little b-day girl soon! There are some sweet treats and some fun summer toys that the kids play with here. So have fun with those. If the instructions aren't clear let me know, the English is terrible I know but I made them and they worked! So whenever you get them, have fun and let me know how they work. Love you all
Last monday, we went to a recently returned family's home. They actually own a photography shop so it is fun we get to see them there. They are the most generous family to us and the father told us that when he and his family were taught about the word of wisdom his father had a wall of American Alcohol that would be worth probably a fortune and all it did was sit on the wall but when he was taught about the word of wisdom, he let the missionaries pour all of it down the drain. Wow! What a strong trust in Heavenly Father to do that. To give up such a wonderful collection, not try and sell it, but to just get rid of it and not let it hurt someone else. The same father told us that he was raised to always give to the missionaries and to never let them go without, and even now he is the most generous person to us. He sees us on the street and will stop us, let us sit down, and buy us fresh mangos. We really like it:)
Another day this week, we went to visit another members home, this man is 88 years old and for a while everyone thought he was dead, turns out he was visiting San Diego. We like to visit him because he is the cutest old man, it reminds me of working in Golden Living. During this appointment he just came from getting a bath and was so talkative. He came around the corner and says, "I smell good now"! He then told us all about this Samoan from Hawaii, we asked what his name was, he said he didn't remember but that if we found him, he would recognize him, we just told him we would look :) It was funny because when we asked to pray he crossed himself and asked if he could make the sign, we just kinda smiled. For the closing pray, he just said, "thank you for the day" and then sat back in his chair. I just assumed he was done and we said amen! It was so cute. He is the sweetest old man and he is just so cute to go and visit you can tell that as we teach he remembers the doctrines of the gospel but is just so old. Now we are trying to work with him to complete his record, so that it is accurate as to his Priesthood and temple work. Sunday it was really cool as well, there is this less active couple that is less active because of work and family problems that come all the time, who we invite every week we do all that we possibly can to help them come to church and this week they came, and all as a family too! It was so good to see them as a family in the church it was really cool. Also, I am working on writing letters for everyone this week to send them next week with pictures . This week we have so many activities planned and I am so excited to be able to write home about all of them. Tonight we have FHE at a member's home, for our investigators, recent converts and those we are working to reactivate it should be so much fun! Then Friday we are showing The Restoration movie free for anyone who would like to come, and Saturday a branch activity. It should be such a fun week for me. Hope you all have a wonderful week! Mahal Kita
Mother's day last week was so great! I loved getting to talk with all of you on Skype and seeing your bright faces. Sorry I kept you up so late. I forgot that it was like 11pm there.
This week for me has been so long and so busy, which is nice but so exhausting. It was Sister Potestad's 23rd b-day and that was the absolutely craziest day. Right now, we have 5 people who we are helping prepare for baptism in June. We visit them a lot and it is so cool to hear from all of them as to their own personal progress. One family we have been working with left us this week and I was so sad to see them go. The daughter left for Thailand and then 2 days later her mom moved with her son. We spent the entire day helping them pack and move all their belongings to Pompanga where they now live. It was sad to see them go but they will be taken care of in Pompanga. Other than that, we seriously go from appointment to appointment. One day we had planned teaching all brand new investigators except for one appointment that was reteaching. It's so fun to teach new investigators and to find them here. Everyone is so willing to let you teach them and to let you share your beliefs with them. We met one family, in the coolest way actually. We were walking, just deciding whose house we could stop at to use the bathroom ( they call it the CR here) and we noticed this woman just watching us. Not too surprising since a lot of people stare as we walk since I am white, but as we were walking we just stopped and said hello. We asked if she had met missionaries like us and she said no. We asked when can we come back and teach you? She said teach me right now and eventually we got an appointment scheduled for the following day. We went back and actually got to teach her and her whole family. They had tons of questions for us and it was so fun to try and answer their questions.rWe taught one of our investigators, who is preparing for baptism, and is a little nervous about taking the full step. We invited them to join us at the baptism so they could see exactly how it will work for them, when we went to go and pick them up it was so cool to see them sitting outside waiting for us to pick them up and to take them with us. The baptism was absolutely perfectly planned for them. The speakers addressed all of the concerns about baptism that our investigators have and it was so cool to have them be there to witness it. When we went back yesterday, after church, we discussed it all with them, it was so cool because we have seen just how ready she is for baptism and how the spirit is touching her. She has yet to really talk with us about it, so we invited her to share with us some of those things. She said that she is feeling that it is true and we invited her son to bear his testimony of why he joined the church. It was absolutely perfect and it was so spiritual to hear about the things that she is feeling and how she is wanting to continue to investigate the church and all the doctrines of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was so cool as we shared with her about Joseph Smith again and to see her feel that she has been given such a great opportunity. The best part is that her son can be the one to baptize her and hopefully confirm her as well. It truly is the most amazing experience to be apart of this work and to be given the opportunity to witness the spirit testify of the truthfulness of the gospel to these people. I have been working on letters and cards to all of you as well so hopefully you will get them soon. We also have been working on updating all our record because it is so important to have them and to be able to have something for the missionaries behind us to go off of.
For Sister Potestad's birthday, it was really fun. The sisters helped us move our member and then we went to TGI Fridays for lunch and bought little cakes for us and President and Sister Mangrobang also brought cake and ice cream over so we have had a lot of cake this week. We put the huge candle in the cake and turned the lights out then when they got home sang to them and had her blow the candle out, it was so fun.
Next week, I get to work with Sister Potestad again on exchanges and we are going to try to go back to Oscars house. I am so excited. Well, I love you all, Mahal kita. Hopefully next week I will have fun stories to tell you not just boring weekly updates.
The connection was not super great but I will take what we got. There was a delay which was fabulous because I would see a smile spread across Teesh's face before she would speak which warmed my heart. We were able to Skype for 2 hours(Lucky, I know!) Teesh spoke in Tagalog and shared some of her favorite things. It was so great to be able to get answers to our questions and see what her living conditions are like, She said it takes over an hour to wash out 5 sets of garments and they dry really fast, only 2 hours. Malia mentioned, "that is fast"? The little things we take for granted here in the states.
Teesh was in an internet cafe filled with all missionaries. You could see them and hear them. Lots of happy mommas for sure. We were able to talk to an elder who is returning the end of this month to South Jordan. He reports his mission on the 14th. We asked if we could come and listen to him report his mission. I know probably a little strange but hey we love missionaries from the Philippines.

Teesh told us about her daily routine and we met her trainer.
Can you believe we are a few days shy of celebrating Sister Hansen serving 4 months.
Isn't Teesh glowing? She is so happy and was smiling constantly, so were we for the record though.
The majority of our call was off centered but it's ok that we saw a lot of her shoulder. Her mic had a short cord so she had to hold it close to her mouth.
Hopefully I will remember enough. Tuesday was a recently returned member's birthday. So last minute, we threw together an FHE to celebrate his birthday. They are the Javier family. They have 2 of the cutest girls, Shamira is 8 and was just baptized by her father in March and Jillian who will be 2 on Sierra's birthday, July 25th. Jillian is so funny. She is more comfortable with me now and loves to touch my water bottle. She pulls it out and hands it to me. We even got Brother Howard and his wife (an investigator) to join us as well as Brother Joseph's family. We played "Do you love your neighbor" and ate cake and dinner, it was so much fun!
We are working with this family to help them be endowed in the temple and be sealed as a family soon as well. They were just married in February, so have some time to prepare.
For the pictures, we were walking and saw this cute little van. All the cars here are so much tinier than at home. Also, this week President and Sister Dahle worked with us to visit two families and our MCM. was really cool to work with the mission president. He is such remarkable man and is so great at sharing the gospel. We taught the Javier family about the priesthood and the roles of men and women in the family. President Dahle explained that he likes to think of the priesthood duty as a backpack that if given to the one who is taking care of everything around the home, the family and everything else it becomes a burden but instead it is given to the one who has less responsibility. It's a way of balancing the responsibility in a family. Sorry if that is confusing. But I think it explains it so well.
We also taught Sister Nanay Judy, Brother Howard's wife. Brother Howard is American and his wife is a Filipino so they both speak English. It was really cool because she let us teach her. We showed her a video about receiving revelation and answers to prayers. President Dahle also gave them a really cool promise that I really hope they are doing all they can to obtain.
This morning has been crazy! We decided to climb Tatlong Crusses (I think) 3 crosses. It's a mountain, hopefully you get some pictures, it was gorgeous. It was just a little foggy, so some of the pictures aren't all that clear. But we got up at 4 am and were supposed to meet the Elders by 5 am. We got there early. It was so scary, the streets were only semi lit and then there was an either drunk or crazy woman that kept walking towards us so we would cross the street and try to get away from her. Finally, she left us alone and the Elders got there but it was freaky. That was the second time this week for me. Sorry, I know you don't want to hear about our crazy people but its so new to me.
We met a couple too that was so cool, they speak English. We see them every once in a while but this week we talked with them, they asked if we were Jehovah's Witnesses and asked us a question they ask all the missionaries that talk to them. I knew the answer to their question and can't wait to go back and have a chance to explain to them. I also got a bug bite on my ankle again, so that was fun! I had the Elders give me a blessing last night for it and am taking an antibiotic. We had several brown outs this week which makes it so hot since we have no fans and we are supposed to have another this week. Sister Dahl(my cousin) came to my area this week for a training for leaders. Unfortunately, I was at the hospital visiting one of our less active's who had her baby this week. The poor woman went into labor and was in labor for about 12 hours before they ended up doing a c-section. She was really nervous for this but you can see the love she has for her daughter already. Her baby was 8 lbs, which looked like a normal baby to me except when you see them next to a regular Filipino baby, she is huge! She is so cute though! Before I forget this week I also saw a rat in our apartment! It freaked me out a little to think that it is living with us. Yesterday, I was looking at my food storage and the rat had eaten through the plastic bag and eaten one of my treats for my 72-hour kit, it was so gross, I pulled all that was left out of the bag and put them in the plastic container, so just a word for the wise about rats they will eat your food :)
A letter Leticia sent through the mail that we just received

Kamusta po ang pamilya ko,

The MTC in Manila is absolutely beautiful, but the city is a crazy place. We went yesterday to immigration and got to see the city and all of the huge houses and all of the slums and really poor areas. We even saw a prison where people yelled from the windows that they wanted bread. It was heart breaking to see the kids running around half dressed and alone. The rules of the road are that you fill in space unless the car behind you is going faster. Buses are always right. I do not even know how people drive here, it is so crazy. It's cute to be with all of the Filipino's here in the MTC because they stare at us and are always wanting to talk with us and shake our hands. They are all so tiny here, we are not only much taller but we are huge compared to them. They always walk around saying "Hello Sister" It is adorable. We have had some really funny experiences in the MTC. We were studying outside yesterday and it was just about dark when these two cats appeared from out of nowhere and we were narrating their lives while we could see them. They provided the best laughs. Then I saw something jumping around and there was a frog/toad just on the grass by us. I tried to get a picture but couldn't. We ended up seeing 3 frogs that night. So far those have been the craziest animals I have seen. It is so funny here because you tell someone that you are from Utah and they think you know everyone in the whole state of Utah. Sister Goodman and I get asked all the time if we were friends before our missions. We watched Legacy Sunday night and it was so cute to see all the Filipinos cover their eyes or their neighbors in the kissing scene. On Sunday, we also got a cultural lesson and the presenter was laughing his head off at all his jokes. It was so great. Filipinos definitely love to laugh. The last couple of days our schedule has been changing like none other and its funny because one person will ask us why we aren't were we are supposed to be and we will be told something completely different by President Trask(sorry for typo on email) The food here is great you just never ask what it is. Today is my last day in the MTC after tomorrow I am a real missionary. We went proselyting with the missionaries from Manila and actually met the missionaries from Olongapo who we will be replacing and they knew Kim and said she will be training soon. By the time you get this you, will probably know who my trainer is and I'll have emailed home but that's OK. It was crazy to go out proselyting because everyone thought I spoke Ilongo since I am going to Olongapo so that's a scary thought. Filipinos speak so fast and so quiet that I can barely hear them let alone understand them.
I hope all is well at home and that you all are holding in there. I am here and I've actually eaten some pineapple on accident, of course. I also got told I will pick the language up quick because I speak it well right now. So there's hope. I love you all and can't wait to tell you all of my fun stories from here. When we meet again, love you all. Talk to you soon.
Mahal Kita,
I can't believe I have been here in the mission 1 transfer already and 2 of my mission are complete. Transfers definitely go faster here in the mission than the MTC.
So much happened this week as well, hopefully I can remember them all. So I'll start with Tuesday, we were teaching an investigator when Sister Potestad gets a text from the zone leaders saying who would be transferred. Guess whose name was on the list...... my companion. I freaked out just a little since I was not fully prepared for that to happen. We hurried and finished the lesson and went home. Then it hit us, we never got the same text that she did, so we called all the different companionships to see if they got the same text and when we called Elder Bray to see if his companion got the same text, because his name was on the text, saying he would be transferred. We learned he was already transferred the day before so we thought, wow, this must be real Sister Aggasid you better get packing. So she cleaned out her closet and we helped her get packing and then at 6 pm we get another text this is the real transfer list we promise, we were like WHAT!!!
It was a prank on us and we spent several hours that day doing nothing! Sister Aggasid did not transfer. I am so glad for that. I'm pretty sure everyone in our zone got a new companion so that is exciting. We picked up Sister Walker, Sister Potestad's new companion. She is from Australia and is my same age. She has been out in the mission 1 transfer more than me. So it's nice to have another native English speaker in our house.
Our house has been more of a hotel this week as well. On Wednesday, when we came home from work, Sister Potestad and Sister Walker had a another companion, Sister Haufano. She was waiting on something to go home. Then the next day after she left, we got a text asking if a different missionary could work with us before being put in her actual area. So it seems like we have a new housemate every couple of days right now. Also I learned about Ice candy ( a popsicle, like an otter pop) and so we made some and have been eating those like crazy! It's a good way to get a lot of water in right?
I don't remember if I told you, but last week at Church we talked with a woman and it turns out she was a less active we have been trying to find since I got here. Her whole family is members, they grew up in the church and have become less active. She is due any day now with her first baby, Ella. We have been visiting her to see if she has had her baby yet and I love teaching her. She is so receptive to us and really wants to return to the church with her family. So far, she is over her due date but no baby yet. She looks so hot and miserable right now being pregnant.
Well, the last thing I have to tell you is we got fed 3 times this week, its a record breaker!!!!!!!
The other sisters have to schedule out their meals and we just are so thankful to be fed. Our first was on Monday. You'll never guess what we ate.... balot and yes, I ate balot for the first time. I didn't get pictures, just a video. So unfortunately I can't send any to you but I am going to see if the family that fed it to us will post them on facebook or something so you can see. Now the question I know you all have, it tasted just like an egg, boiled but was pretty salty. We then got to eat ice cream and sweets after that it was not too bad. Then guess what happened this week at Church for us? We had 12 less active members attend sacrament meeting. I am thrilled at those numbers it means that the less actives are feeling the love of the members and are being welcomed back in to their home. We met a less active this week with a member who we have been trying to contact several times and she would hide from us or pretend she isn't home. She was out in the yard doing laundry and we were able to talk with her, she still has a testimony but has some pretty serious word of wisdom problems right now. As we learned this, I realized I have never had to help someone with something like that because she is the first who has told us about something like that. So hopefully she will let us teach her again and help her remember all that she has been taught and the things that she knows. This week President and Sister Dahle are working with us so that will be exciting! I'll let you know how that goes. Oh and before I forget I experienced my first rainy day, it was Tuesday. The sky looked like it might rain and then we were out walking and there was a clash of thunder and it poured for like 15 minutes. Everyone took cover and got under some shelter, we all just stood there waiting for the rain to stop cause if you weren't under shelter you were drenched like a rat! It was quite the experience but luckily nothing got wet on me!
Sorry for no pictures this week. I will take more this week and send them to you all!
Mahal Ko Kayo lahat!

So the experience from last week about the less-active brother, has completely changed everything for me. He came once again to church yesterday and has committed to come every week. He comes straight from Catholic Church, every Sunday. I think that's my favorite that he is so committed to come. Sister Lucillo spoke for her last Sunday here in the mission and he came. He sat in the back, but I just wanted to cry I was so happy that he came again. I love that he was touched to the point that it's not a one time thing for him. After sacrament meeting was over, I saw him get up and I wanted to go and talk to him but I didn't make it but when I turned around Sister Lucillo had introduced him to the Branch President and we are working on getting him a fellow-shipper so that he knows how much we love him and want to help him.

This week we decided that rather than go out to eat at a restaurant after our meeting we would instead make food and have a potluck. Since we are sisters, we got to bring the main meal except the rice. We requested the elders bring rice and they did! We had a ton of rice. Sister Lucillo made Bicol Express which is absolutely delicious and the best news ever... I got the recipe so I can make it for you at home. It is so spicy! But delicious. Everyone brought other things. We made graham balls. It's cute, they throw the H in the word graham so its gra - ham I just giggle every time. Some elders bought a cake and others brought drinks and we had a little potluck it was fun.

The the other fun thing we got to do was a Service Project. The other Elders in our zone are in Morong. No clue how to tell you where that is but its more of what I expected the Philippines to be like. Sometimes I forget I am here since I live in the city and we have 3 groceries stores, a mall, and the base right here. We joke with the Morong elders that they teach relief society because with it being summer, all the men move for work and leave their families. For our project, we helped an investigator with his job of cleaning the streets. I though picking up garbage, but no, we were weeding and people were using machetes to cut vines and then we burned everything. We have 3 missionaries who are going home this transfer and some who are pretty trunky. One found a dead dog and decided to offer it as a burnt offering in the fire. It stunk so bad! Also we burned so many piles of garbage that we couldn't watch them all and so we almost started several forest fires.. We joked the new MORMON MISSIONARIES//HELPING HANDS GROUP start largest forest fire the Philippines has ever seen. But nope we got them put out before anything bad happened.

We also tried to have a couple missionaries eat balot, I was not among them luckily, one day for me, but not yet. Poor Elder Bray has had to eat it 2 times cause he can't finish it. I got absolutely fried at the service project, it's funny, they don't know what a sunburn like I got is. They told me to put petroleum jelly on my skin, I just told them I was alright. But the miracle is that I went tan, at least I think tan they still tell me I am red which is true compared to them. We watched the RM with Sister Lucillo before she left and joked with her that that will be her life now but it won't be she will be great. Our favorite line right now with each other is "Hallelujah, Praise the Lord". Also, we had the coolest experience this week. We were out proselyting, when a lady called out to us saying she had something to return to us. We were like what do you need to return to us? She pulled out a Book of Mormon and we said, "what, you've been taught the gospel and we have no clue who you are". Turns out, she saw the missionaries everyday going to an appointment, said to them, why aren't you coming to teach me like you do this other person. So she began being taught to the point of having a baptismal goal date but because of transfers and no records, she had been lost for a year before we met her. We told her the book is hers to keep and that we will come and teach her now. Also, a less active member, who has not been all that thrilled to have us over, found out that her friend who has been a member for a year was able to receive her endowments and be sealed to her family. She told us she worries for her son that he will ask her why his father is not in his life and why she is not active in the church. So, she has decided to try and get back with his father, be married so that she can be sealed to them forever. We referred the father to the missionaries and are working with her to help her receive her endowment here soon. Timing is so crazy here, and we never know when someone will be ready for the gospel or the next step. Also, last thing, the experience I told you about last week was sent to our mission president and he is including it in our weekly hand off for the whole mission to see. I can't believe I have already been here for 1 transfer or that I am this far in. Time is so strange on a mission, the days really never end and then suddenly you have been here for 3 months!

Yesterday, before I forget was so fun since it's Sunday and Sister Lucillos last day here, we went to lunch at a members home in their area, then to a meeting where we were fed dinner and then a second dinner. It was so strange to me I am not used to being fed so many times. It's funny too there is a missionary here who is the size of a 10 yr old boy but is over 1 yr into his mission and all the elders just pick him up by his arms and carry him around it's so funny to watch. I'm sure he hates it but it's funny.

I love you all and will let you know all about transfers this week as soon as I can!

I honestly can't believe another week has come and gone already! This week was such a crazy week. We had our zone conference on Tuesday, which was so great. We have such great leaders here who are so inspired as to the direction of our mission. We are all striving to be more obedient missionaries to the rules in the white handbook. Obedience has been on my mind a lot because obedience is something I think is taken too lightly. Obedience is the base line of all, rules mean nothing without obedience and laws and obligations mean nothing as well.
But on to the rest of the week. One of the rules we are striving to be better at is exercising daily. So on Wednesday, we started our morning with the new exercise Sister Dahle(our mission president's wife) gave to us and as we were finishing my companion passed out. We were all freaking out, but she remembers nothing but me talking to her as she was waking up. We had the President next door come and give her a blessing and I monitored her for the rest of the day, she mostly slept while I studied and took it easy. We took the next couple of days easy and so far nothing more has happened so hopefully it won't again.
Friday, I got to go on exchanges with Sister Lucillo. She is going home on the 22nd. I will miss her so much. She is such a great missionary. While we were out, she said she kept hearing the name Caron St. over and over in her mind and kinda brushed it off thinking it's not in the plan for the day. Then the voice got louder and said Caron St. Now! So she said to me and the member who was working with us, lets go find a less active. She pulled out the sheet that had the less active names and addresses on them, and we set out to find the address. It took a while since the road isn't straight through. When we arrived, there was a man sitting on a balcony looking at us and two very large scary looking dogs behind the gate. We asked around before entering and finally braved the dogs and asked this man if he knew the name we were looking for. He asked us why and we told him we were missionaries from the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and that he was a member we would like to meet. He said that was his name and that we could teach him but he didn't want to be forced to go to church and we again explained that we just wanted to meet him. It was really interesting to hear his story. He was baptized in 1970 when the naval base was active and he was taught by navy men. He was given an English BOM and taught that even if he didn't understand all that he was reading, he could pray to know if Joseph Smith was a prophet. He said he still had no doubt that Joseph Smith was a true prophet.Sister Lucillo asked if he believed that everything happens for a reason, he said yes and that that was the reason he let us teach him that day. All of this was in Tagalog but the strangest thing happened for me, I didn't understand what everyone was saying but whenever he spoke it was as if he spoke in English and I understood. Sister Lucillo shared a scripture and it was read in Tagalog so I really had no clue what was said but I felt that he needed to hear that God knows him personally so I testified of that, turns out that is exactly what the scripture said and I had no clue what was going on. We invited him to come to join us in church on Sunday. As we all left, we knew he would be there Sunday. He even told us he would come straight from his catholic service. We could not believe by the end of that appointment how strong the spirit was and how amazing it was to be doing the lord's work. So fast forward to Sunday, we got there a little late but he was not there. I sat by Sister Lucillo and silently was losing my faith that he would come, I thought he forgot and isn't going to show up, especially as conference continued. By the end of the first session I had pretty much given up hope that he was coming and as I stood to stretch at the end I turned around and there he was! I was so beyond overjoyed, I couldn't believe I lost my faith in him but he was touched and still came!!!! Sister Lucillo and I just hugged each other and were so beyond ecstatic. I was beaming all day yesterday! Sister Lucillo told me later that as we found him we had just been told that the baptism that had been planned for her last Saturday in the mission would be cancelled and she was frustrated to not get a baptism in her last area but that she learned its not all about baptisms its about finding the lost sheep. It was an amazing day.
Then as we went out proselyting that day, we met three new investigators and as we gave the first lesson, I noticed one sister was very touched to the point that she was almost emotional, so I hope that I will have the opportunity to teach her the gospel and help to change her life.
We went back to our apartment to get our sheets for PEC and were called out to by a man on a tricycle, neither of us recognized him but we went to talk with him. He is a less active. We went to contact him several weeks ago but he was either gone or not available. He was sitting there waiting for us and informed us that he wanted to be retaught with his family. I couldn't believe it, how often do you walk down the street, and have people tell you to teach them! It is so crazy how quickly the work is progressing here and everywhere. We don't always know our purpose here in each area of our mission but we do know that we have a purpose and I feel that this man was one of the reasons I was here was to meet him to give him a BOM in Tagalog and give him something that no one else could. I will never forget this man or my experience teaching him and I am so grateful for Sister Lucillo following the promptings she was given to meet this man. I love you all at home. I hope that all is well for you there especially in the spring time. For now I'll keep enjoying the heat here and the craziness of the Philippines. Until next week,
This was taken at a conference for a few of the areas. Sister Hansen is 3rd row from bottom, slightly to the right of the center, yellow dress. Her hair is down. Look at this amazing group of missionaries!

So we have a chart to help the littles with the count down of the return of Sister Leticia Hansen. The chart says "Called to Serve". Each letter has little circles to put a sticker on to help with the count down. As you can see, the sister missionary had no face. Bria felt Teesh needed a face, so she drew it. I think it looks very complete, don't you?
So much happened this week, it was so crazy. I told my housemates about April Fool's Day and they wanted to prank our Zone leaders. So, we made a plan that we would call them and pull a prank on them. It was so funny. The sisters were so excited, so on Wednesday we called them and Sister Aggasid told them that Sister Potestad and Sister Lucillo were fighting to the point that Sister Lucillo had her bags packed and was ready to leave her mission early. It was so cute because the Elders knew it was a joke but played along anyway. The sisters were so worried we would get in trouble but it turns out the Elders pulled worse pranks on each other. We also got a call later that day while we were out saying we needed to have a 72 hour kit now! A typhoon was on its way, we all thought ha ha joke-lang (your pulling our leg) but nope the member that was with us said, "No, it's true, there is a typhoon coming and should hit on Saturday". That freaked me out a little thinking, wow I am going to go through my first typhoon. So we spent most of that day getting me a 72 hour kit and preparing ourselves for the possibility of a typhoon and flooding. A couple days later we received a text that the storm had changed directions and would not come to Olongapo as planned. It was funny they say that the typhoon attacks them :) Instead it was just so so so windy here it made wearing a skirt difficult. So we had a lot of fun trying to get everything all ready for that. Luckily for me, I live somewhat inland and on the 2nd story of an apartment complex so we are above ground and have a 3rd floor. So it would have been unlikely we would have been evacuated. Then on Friday, we had our follow up training from President and Sister Dahle. It was so great, Sister Dahle compared these first 4 weeks to that of a potter who has just picked us, the clay, up and thrown us into this strange place and is molding us to then become something beautiful. President Dahle spoke about the covenants we entered into at the temple and how those covenants we entered in should be the driving force for missionary work. Then at the end of our mission we are never released from the work that we have entered into for those covenants. It was so great to see all of the people from my district in Provo. I felt so bad for all those who had to travel. Sunday we had spoken to our recent convert, Elizabeth. She is 17 and has her son Kalvin. She had never before known that he could receive a name and blessing so we worked so hard to get it all set up and then waited and waited and they were not coming. It broke my heart, we wanted this so badly to happen. Finally, they came and our Branch President, who is great, let him receive a blessing. She was all smiles afterwards and Kalvin is always smiling. He is the cutest thing ever. Elizabeth has a cousin who we have been teaching, she told us that her parents are now going to let her be baptized. I am thrilled. Since this week was Holy Week, we got to see several parades. It was so cool, I got a ton of pictures and as I was doing that I was swarmed with little bugs, it was awful. The bugs were crawling all over me. Then they never left me alone and they were crawling up my skirt and down my shirt it was so gross! But, I have pictures for you all now so you are welcome.
I was told that I may see some people whip themselves this week but fortunately I did not. It was just so strange to not have people around all the time. Usually the streets are packed, the mall is packed, but instead they were all closed, chained up and the streets were empty, it was weird to see that.
Tuesday is Zone Conference for me so we are going today to get new dresses for that. General Conference is this weekend. Also the lizard in the pictures lives in our home we named her Sister Lizzy and her friend Sister Lucy. Pict.101-103 is a tiny kitten I saw just laying in the streets. 127-128 5 day old ducklings 129-131 those are fish just swimming right next to our less actives house 132 is a close up of their cat the thing is so skinny! 135 l-r Me, Elizabeth, Angelica (Kalvin) Sister Aggasid.
I love you all! Talk to you next week

This week was really fast for me. I didn't get a chance to take very many pictures unfortunately but I will try to do better.

We are working on finding all the members of our branch here. It's so crazy, there are 27 pages of members and we have only very few who actually attend church on a regular basis. We began to look for people, its strange here because addresses don't always exist and numbers don't always add up. We can walk down a street and the numbers will go 90, 39, 95 and sometimes they just jump around like crazy. There are also some streets have two different names or go in circles, it makes me miss the grid system in Utah knowing right where you are and how to get where you are going.

We began looking for some people on our list that we had an address for but most of the time we just walk all day looking for people asking all the shop owners if they know where the address is or if they even have heard of the person. Sometimes we get lucky, but most of the time, we end up walking in circles. That is our joke that that is our favorite thing to do, walk in circles. One of the last couple of days we walked up and down this street like 4 times trying to figure out the numbers and it turns out the numbers don't always match up on both sides of the road. So that was fun. We walked from 16th Street to 8th street. Most of the time we never even find the person but on one day this week we got really lucky and ended up finding 4 of the names for the day. One of them had died 20 years ago and no one had updated the record. No wonder she was inactive!!!! We also met with a member to see why she wasn't coming to church and some how someone got the record all wrong. Her brother was baptized and taught, not her. How crazy is that, but it led us to meet with her father-in-law who is very nice to us and is going to let us teach him a little. We also had a baptism this week a less-active family who is returning had their daughter baptized on Saturday by her father. It's so fun to meet with them. They have the cutest little 1 yr old and an 8 yr old. The 1 yr old is warming up to me and constantly comes and shakes my hand its so cute. The 8 yr old reminds me of Bria, she pulls out her BOM reader every lesson and tells us the stories in the BOM. We are also teaching a 9 yr old boy as well. He comes from a part-member family and is the last to be baptized. He is so cute. He sits and listens so intently and is trying so hard to learn so that he can be baptized. It's really cute and his family is so sweet to us. They stop everything they are doing just to listen. I think of Bria every time and how excited she is to be baptized. School just got out this week and they will go back the end of June. So everyone is going on vacation or going out of town. This morning, we all played volleyball and basketball as a group it was really fun to get out and do something fun and exercise.

On Saturday, we attended a Relief Society activity where we got massages and most everyone does reflexology. I asked what that is because it looked like a foot zone and it is. Isn't that cool?

My heart broke this week as we learned that one of our members had something happen in her family and the daughter she has been raising but is actually her niece was taken from her and then they were forced out of their house. I feel so bad for her to lose all that she has.

We have General Conference the week after you here and get to watch all of it in the district center. This week is Holy week here and I hear that I will see some really strange things because this is the one holiday that everyone celebrates. It's the only time that people don't work. I was reading this week in Alma about the Anti-nephi-lehi's and how willing they were to lay down their lives and their weapons because they understood the Plan of Salvation.

This week was so great!
It was also so hard because we lost another member of our MTC District, Sister Goodman. I know that she is where she needs to be. We went shopping on Monday and I got some new clothes.

This week we went to visit a member in the hospital and wow, that was a culture shock. I had no idea that a hospital could be that dirty. It looked more like a triage unit after a major natural disaster, not a hospital! I was so heart broken for these people who have nothing. It was so hard because I just kept thinking how is what I am doing actually helping these people, but the truth is, I am helping these people. They live in one-room homes that they pull blankets out on the floor to sleep on but I am making a difference in their lives. I am helping them understand that God is mindful of each person individually and that we will be given all that we need through blessings.
It's fun every time I am out walking around, I have people come up to me and say, "Hello ma'm" it might be the only English they know, but they are so sweet to try and communicate with me. Even though I don't know what they are saying to me, they try to communicate with me. They all think I am so tall and I wore my hair down yesterday they all said I looked like a barbie doll. Several kids just stare at me and love to come and hug me it is so cute. Every time I climb into a jeepney or a tricycle, I think how funny it is going to be when we are all here as a family trying to climb into either. I barely fit in a tricycle so I can't wait to see Dad climb in.

On Friday, I got to go out with the sisters in my area who are a transfer ahead of me here but it turns out we will probably go home the same time. It was so fun to get to talk with them. They are in kind of the same place as I am, just trying to figure it all out. When we were with each other, we were a trio and I got to visit Sister Goodman's apartment. I felt so so sad to see the things she had left there, things like her shoes it reminded me of all that we had together in the MTC and travelling here to the Philippines. It was so fun being together though I get to know one another. After we got everything all ready, we got to go visit people and got to climb a mountain (really you just walk stairs) it's so funny they all thought it was such a huge work out. I was totally used to it from work and so the only think that bothered me was just that it was the hottest part of the day and I just felt gross.

It's cute every week, we eat out as a district. At our last district meeting, one the missionaries tried to get me to eat balot but luckily they found none. We ate at a place called Jollibee. My trainer asked what I like to eat from Jollibee and didn't understand I have never heard of Jollibee before coming here. It's weird, they have spaghetti at a fast food restaurant. Bria would love it. Everyone asks about my rock necklace and asks if it has a meaning or if I am a geologist. I tell them it's from my mom.
I love you all and my time is up. I can't wait to write again next week I pray for you all.

I will start with the last few days in Provo, and continue up until now. We met with Leah for the last time Monday night. She shared with us about a bent nail and gave one to each of us. She told us that as we see ourselves as the bent nails of the world, we are able to help lift each other. She talked about how if we continue to beat each other on the head all we do is continue to bend ourselves more, but if we help lift one another at the back, we can all help one another to become the best that we can be and we can become closer to becoming straight again. It is also important for us to remember we don't need to be perfectly straight in order to return to our Father in Heaven. On Tuesday

We sang our last song for choir in Provo, we sang" Be still My Soul".

Traveling was hard. We were all so exhausted.

We had to be up so early and were traveling so long and then did not get to the Manila MTC until almost midnight on Saturday. We lost 2 days between flying and the time zone.dWhenWWhenhenWehnWehn

The MTC is so nice. It is just like a really nice resort, even for America. The drivers here are scary. No one obey's the laws of the road and everyone tries to get as close as they can to the other cars. President Trask was so great. We learned while there that he had only been there 6 weeks. He is really laid back but the previous president was like a drill sergeant. So we always went to him to ask if we could do some things knowing our other teachers would be mad at us for not following our schedules.

We got to go to the temple grounds and take pictures since it was closed. We also got locked in our classroom and had to have someone come take the doorknob off to let us out. We all studied outside one night and there were these cats chasing each other around. We were laughing our heads off at them and narrating their story. Also, we chased some toads/frogs around it was really fun. I didn't get a picture though. We watched Legacy that night too and it was so cute all the Filipino missionaries were giggled in the kissing scenes. They are so cute. Everywhere we would go, they would say, "Hello, sisters". On our first day they came in while we were doing service and were helping us and talking with us. We got to proselyte in Manila. I was with a sister from New Zealand. We also had a room check and so we all spent time cleaning and getting ready. When the sisters came in and asked if the room was alright for us, we laughed a little at the misunderstanding of a room-check.

Now I am here in the Olongapo East Zone and in the East and West Tapinac. I learned yesterday that there are 6 missionaries in this branch with me. That is so weird I am used to only a few missionaries for a stake. Our schedule is weird because we don't leave the apartment until 2 some days and by 3 most everyone is taking a nap because it is so hot. We are going into summer here. My housemates are Sister Aggasid (companion) and Sister Potestad, and Sister Lucillo. I ate a little fried fish that looked nasty and I went to a funeral that was outdoors it was so strange. I got to see Sister Goodman at our District Meeting and that was really great to see a familiar face from Provo.

We are called a batch that came in and its weird because most of the 26 came from Manila and so I don't know them but they all think I do. They also think that because I am from Utah, I know everyone from anywhere in Utah and think I live next to the temple. If anyone asks as a missionary coming here I would definitely recommend somethings like half socks. I didn't realize it but most everyone wears them here. I have seen a couple cockroaches and they are not my favorite. For everyone preparing to come it is hard, there is no getting around that but just remember that you wont understand a thing and that's all right. You were sent here for a reason. Everyone will love you and want to talk to you. Don't be afraid or worried about anything and you can always email me. President Trask will meet you at the airport in Manila and is so great at helping everyone.

I love you all and miss you but can't wait until I can speak the language and bring you all back with me to show you all the people. I also had my first baptism this week, Laden she is 14. She is so cute and excited to be a member which is so great. I am so excited to hear from you all.

Love,

Sister Hansen

He must be serving in the office in the mission. Anyway, he posted all these photos and we were lucky enough to have Teesh and her traveling buddies from the Provo MTC, ride with him, so that means Teesh is in a lot of photos. If you only knew how much these photos have made me smile. I love how this elder has documented all the little details(man after my own heart) He mentions how this will be the last group of missionaries he will be welcoming into the mission, so I feel super extra blessed.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">In this photo, Teesh, Sister Gibbs, and Sister Edrington are front row girls during orientation.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This is all the new missionaries with their trainers. Obviously there were a lot more missionaries that attended the Manila MTC than Provo. Can you see the 4 Caucasian sisters in the bunch. President and Sister Dahle are from Lehi Utah. They are front and center in the photo below.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This is a pretty common scene(according to the elder serving in the mission office) The dogs are all pretty skinny and are sometimes people's dinner. Hungry anyone?
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I laughed with this photo. Teesh rarely ate fresh vegetables in the MTC.

I just couldn't leave the MTC without saying thank you for sharing your daughter with me and the people of the Philippines. I can tell you have a very loving family. You should see the way Sister Hansen's face lights up when she reads your letters and how excited she is to get your packages. It is hard sending family on missions(I have sent two brothers) and I can't even imagine sending your daughter! However, I just wanted to let you know she is blessing lives here. I am a person with many weaknesses that I am aware of and surely many more hidden ones. Sister Hansen has not only helped me identify weaknesses, but is also helping me turn them into strengths. I am so grateful for you and love you for raising a wonderful daughter. I can't wait to hear about the ways she blesses the people of the Philippines.
Love,
Sister Gibbs
(from Colorado)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13567322006251342671noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7544592144544399199.post-68559756380616260882015-03-07T20:15:00.000-08:002015-03-07T20:17:25.944-08:00Arrived!!!!!

I have made it to Manila!!!!

It is so beautiful here. We got in and to the MTC about midnight and just started our first morning and day here. It is 11:00 right now on Saturday which is weird that we missed like 2 days in travel. The traffic and cars are so weird there are lanes but no one follows them and they just go wherever they want to go. I tried to call in Tokyo but no one answered since it was so late. We met President Trast at the airport last night and he is wonderful. He is so friendly and warm and inviting to everyone. I will be here until Wednesday and then will transfer out to the field. I don't know when I will have the opportunity to email home again. I haven't gotten any pictures yet but I will before I leave and try to send them home. It is not as hot as I was expecting but we are inside for almost all of the last little bit. It is so bright and so nice here. I actually got a hot shower last night, it felt wonderful.

I hope that one day I can bring the whole family here for you to experience it, but the flight is awful. I took some of the pills but I still got pretty sick yesterday and a little today. This morning we got pancakes and ham with some delicious bread. I have no clue what kind it is but I love it. It's weird to think that it is after 8 pm there at home and the next day here but one day I will be adjusted to it. We also found out the temple is closed while we are here for renovations so we get to see it but not go inside.

Today I get to go and teach with the missionaries here in Manila and that will be so cool. Let me know if there is anything you want me to find out or to look up and get pictures of while I am here. Oh and the water tastes terrible but hopefully soon I can get used to that. I loved talking with you all in Salt Lake that was the best part. I tried to text when we got up this morning but I did not have any service and we got busy. I am working on getting caught up on sleep. I felt like I slept the whole way here but somehow I am still tired. I haven't been able to look up the flight numbers but I bet you could find them on line or call someone to get it figured out I think the flight was 623 from Salt Lake to Portland and from there to Narita Japan and then Manila. I exchanged some of my money into pesos and they are so cool looking. The pills I took helped a lot but did knock me out for a while.

Love you all, I'll talk to you as soon as I can.

Mahal Kita
